Lac La Belle — Visit Keweenaw has awarded State Representative Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock) the Visit Keweenaw Tourism Champion – Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his long-standing commitment to advancing the region’s tourism industry across multiple sectors.
According to a press release from Visit Keweenaw, Markkanen was selected for his consistent support of tourism-focused businesses and community organizations. A key factor in the recognition was his instrumental role in the reopening of the Lake Linden-Hubbell ORV and snowmobile trail, a vital connection to the Keweenaw’s trail system and the Bootjack area that had been severely damaged during the 2018 Father’s Day Flood.
“Rep. Markkanen has been, and continues to be, a champion of the Keweenaw’s visitor economy through his hard work with mom and pop businesses and recreation volunteer groups,” said Brad Barnett, Visit Keweenaw executive director. “His recent legislative work focused on modernizing Michigan’s recreation authorities and this framework will strengthen the recreation economy, which the Keweenaw relies on. We proudly recognize him for his work to support our industry.”
According to the release, Keweenaw applauded Markkanen’s “dedication to enhancing outdoor recreation, supporting small businesses, and advocating for public policy that bolsters the region’s tourism economy. His leadership has helped ensure the Keweenaw remains a welcoming and vibrant destination for visitors and residents alike.”
