Hancock annexes parcel

HANCOCK — The City of Hancock has grown slightly due to action by the City Council Wednesday. The council approved annexation of parcel #011-116-010-00 currently located in Quincy Township and adjacent to city limits at its meeting Wednesday. The parcel is part of Terrace Park and was put into the city’s name in 2003 via purchase, but was never annexed as the city thought, according to City Manager Mary Babcock.

“This spring, it had been put on the Houghton County tax foreclosure sale, and we had to go through and prove ownership,” Babcock said. “And now it’s time to bring it into the city.” The Manager said she send letters to Quincy Township and the State to notify them of the annexation. She explained the annexation will follow state procedure to ensure everything is correctly done, and the inclusion of the parcel will redraw the city limits.

The council also approved an LLC payment application for the Business and Technology Park in the amount of $219,970.42. The next payment going towards the park will be the last one. “So there’ll probably be a change order for this project at the next meeting, or the first meeting of November that will be the balancing change order to make sure the quantities are in the right categories, and then they’ll do most likely their final payout. So we’re very close, but we won’t release all funds until the touch list is done,” Babcock said.

Finally the council appointed William Rogers of Lakeview Manor as the Resident Commissioner for the Hancock Housing Commission. There is still an opening for another commissioner for the commission and the Hancock Housing Foundation, and Babcock asked the council to send her ideas of potential candidates. She said the individual should be someone who lives in the city.

Starting at $3.50/week.
