HOUGHTON — Phi Kappa Tau fraternity at Michigan Technological University captured its second straight win in the month-long statue competition in this year’s Winter Carnival. With this year’s theme “Through Ice and Snow, to Space We Go,” the Hancock fraternity’s winning statue, “Keweenaw in Another Universe,” shot them into first place overall, according to Michigan Tech’s chapter of Blue Key National Honor Society.

Blue Key, organizers of Winter Carnival, announced the snow statue winners Thursday afternoon, following judging earlier that day. There were 11 entries in the month-long division with second place going to Tau Kappa Epsilon for “Zathura,” while Delta Zeta and Delta Sigma Phi earned third place with “Futurama.” In the men’s division, Lambda Chi Alpha followed Phi Kappa Tau and Tau Kappa Epsilon, taking third place with “Hoth.”

In the women’s division, Alpha Sigma Tau took first place with “Aliens Around the World.”

“Futurama,” captured first place in the Co-ed division. Sigma Tau Gamma and Alpha Gamma Delta earned second place with “Spaceballs Parody.” Beta Sigma Theta and Delta Phi Epsilon captured third with “Lots of Aliens.”

In the All-Nighter snow statue competition, in which participants could only begin Wednesday afternoon and had to finish Thursday morning, Catholic Campus Ministries at St. Albert the Great University Parish earned first overall with their entry “Faith in Space.” There were 72 one-night entries with the Women’s Rugby Club taking the top spot in the co-ed division with Mind Trekkers and Society of Women Engineers, finishing second and third, respectively.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers won the women’s division while Peace Campus Ministry took the men’s one-night title.

While the most visible of all Carnival competitions, statues are just one part of the weekend event. Overall winners should be announced later Saturday. A complete list of all statue winners as well as all of today and tomorrow’s events can be found at mtu.edu/carnival/2026/
