KNHP Advisory Commission 2026 Heritage Grant application window open

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette KNHP Advisory Commission Executive Director Sean Gohman discussed the 2026 Keweenaw Heritage Grant program during the commission’s quarterly meeting last month.

CALUMET TOWNSHIP – The Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission’s annual Keweenaw Heritage Grant application window is still open. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2026, according to Advisory Commission Executive Director Sean Gohman.

Heritage Grant opportunities are open to owners and operators of historic properties and providers of history programs in support of projects that further the preservation and interpretation of the story of copper on the Keweenaw Peninsula.

The requirements, he said, are heritage sites, properties, or properties located within the boundaries of the National Park.

“There’s really no changes in the application this year,” Gohman said. “Eligibility requirements are the same.”

Gohman said there is, however, one notable difference in 2026 compared to previous years worth mentioning.

“The big change in the application – and this really only affects a couple applicants – are reducing indirect costs,” he said. “We’re capping it at 10%. This was kind of a hinderance for some of our heritage sites and partners that apply. Thirty to 47% was going to overhead costs and was really hampering what they could get accomplished, so we’re capping indirect costs this year.”

The minimum grant request is $1,000 and the maximum grant request is $15,000, according to the NPS website. At least $115,000 is expected to be available for the 2026 Keweenaw Heritage Grants program.

“My notes say about $115,000,” Gohman said. “I’m thinking it’s going to be closer to $120,000; we’re working on a couple of things to settle that.”

Applications are due by April 3, 2026. Awards will be announced Wed. May 13, and the funds will be available on June 5. The project completion date is no later than Dec. 31, 2027, and Project Reports will be due on Feb. 4, 2028.
