HOUGHTON — In a region where long winters, rural geography, and growing health care needs shape daily life, access to timely, high-quality care isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. That’s why the $5 million renovation and expansion at the Aspirus Houghton Clinic marks more than a construction project. It represents a strategic investment in the long-term health and resilience of the people in the Keweenaw.
Onsite work began in late April, with completion anticipated in late March 2026. The scope is ambitious and thoughtfully designed to improve efficiency, expand capacity, and elevate the patient experience. Thirteen new exam rooms and two new procedure rooms will significantly increase access, reduce wait times and allow more patients to receive care close to home. A redesigned central registration area and waiting room will create a more welcoming, streamlined environment. Updates to existing spaces will modernize workflows and support care teams in delivering coordinated, compassionate services.
“We are committed to continuously improving health care for the Keweenaw region,” said Deanna Hayes, MSN, RN, Director – Michigan Region Clinics, Aspirus Health. “While the clinic has served this community for many years, it became clear that to meet the growing needs of our patients, we needed to expand services and capacity.”
This expansion arrives at a pivotal moment for rural health care. Across the country, communities are navigating workforce shortages, shifting care models, and rising demand for outpatient services. Aspirus’ response is proactive: invest locally, innovate thoughtfully, and ensure that high-quality care remains accessible in the Upper Peninsula.
One of the most visible — and immediately impactful — additions is the new drive-through pharmacy, now operational. The Houghton location is the first retail pharmacy in the Aspirus system to introduce this convenient option, aligning with national trends that prioritize safety, efficiency, and patient-centered design.
Drive-through pharmacies have grown increasingly popular as families juggle work, school, and care giving responsibilities. For patients who are immunocompromised, managing mobility challenges, or caring for young children, the ability to pick up prescriptions without leaving the vehicle can be transformative. During the clinic’s interior renovations — including the temporary closure of the walk-in storefront — the drive-through ensures uninterrupted access to essential medications.
“This new drive-thru pharmacy is an important step forward for our patients,” said Abby Johnson, Manager – Michigan Region Pharmacies, Aspirus Health. “Convenience plays a major role in how people access care, and this service allows our community to pick up medications quickly, safely, and with greater ease — especially during our construction phase.”
The coordinated Saturday hours between Houghton and Laurium Pharmacies further demonstrate a regional approach to care access, ensuring weekend availability while supporting operational efficiency. It’s a small adjustment with a meaningful community impact.
Yet perhaps the most significant enhancement to access is still ahead. On March 2, Aspirus Houghton Clinic will open a new Walk-In Clinic, providing same-day care for non-life-threatening illnesses and minor injuries with no appointment required. Open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., including holidays, the service is designed for life’s unpredictable moments: a child’s sudden ear infection, a weekend sprain, a lingering cough that can’t wait for the next scheduled visit.
“Our goal is to be here for our patients when they need us most,” said Hayes. “The Walk-In Clinic provides reassurance that patients can receive prompt, high-quality care close to home for unexpected health concerns.”
By offering evaluations, minor procedures, and access to basic lab testing and imaging, the Walk-In Clinic bridges the gap between primary care and emergency services. For many patients, it will mean shorter wait times and lower costs compared to an emergency department visit — while still delivering comprehensive, coordinated care.
These enhancements reflect a broader philosophy. Projects like this strengthen the community by improving access to essential health services and supporting long-term wellness. Beyond patient care, the investment contributes to local economic vitality, reinforcing Aspirus’ role as both a health system and a community partner.
In challenging times for health care, the transformation of Aspirus Houghton Clinic is a reminder that innovation does not only happen in large metropolitan centers.
For the Keweenaw, this renovation is more than bricks and mortar. It is expanded access. It is modernized care. It is reassurance that, whether planned or unexpected, high-quality health care is close to home — today and for years to come.
