Looking ahead
CCISD preps for new year

HANCOCK – For those who have begun counting the remaining days of summer, the Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD) and its 14 school districts are preparing for the upcoming school year. Among the preparations are the finalizing of the 2026-2027 school year calendar.
Executive Secretary to the Superintendent Loret Roberts said as of Wednesday, she has not yet received calendars from any of the school districts. This being the week of July 4th, she said, there are not many people in the offices.
Roberts said the ISD calendar for the upcoming year has not been started yet.
“We have to wait for Hancock to release its calendar,,” she said, “and I haven’t seen any come through yet from any of the schools.”
Roberts said the ISD tries to align its school calendar with Hancock’s, because the ISD has four classrooms in the Hancock district.
Hancock’s calendar was released Tuesday morning, however. Roberts said in that event, it was also sent to the Director of Special Education Kristina Penfold, who handles the calendars for the classrooms.
Roberts said because each of the 14 school districts created their own calendars, coordinating them is challenging.
“We don’t have a common calendar, she said. “It’s something that would be nice to have happen, but everybody does something a little different.”
While the CCISD does not have the upcoming year’s calendar complete, it does have a five-year calendar, she said. The common calendar for the 2026-2027 school year is included in the five-year document, which already has some basic district-wide dates on it.
“We already have the in-service dates, the Christmas and Spring Break, the first day of school all planned out for everyone,” said Roberts, “but then every district does something different.”
The new school year begins on Tuesday, September 8, said Roberts. The calendar will be finalized long before then.
“Typically, I receive them from some districts right away, but I don’t have any yet,” she said. “But it’s only July First.”
