Money in politics, Halloween fun this week at the PLDL

HOUGHTON – Area residents can learn more about the way money and politics intertwine or enjoy some spooky activities with the family, as the Portage Lake District Library hosts two events to round out the week.

From 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Mary Jane Hatton will present “An Update on Money and Politics.”

Hatton is an associate professor in the International School of Business at Finlandia University, and is acting president of the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country. The LWV CC’s Money in Politics committee seeks to make the complex issue more understandable for all, a release for the event said.

According to the release, the presentation will provide information on policy shaped by Supreme Court decisions such as Citizen United v. FEC and McCutcheon v. FEC. Hatton will describe how this has affected campaign contribution laws and “money in politics.” She will also share information about what is being done in response to these decisions.

The program is free and open to everyone.

From 6-8 p.m. Friday, the library, along with the City of Houghton Police Department will provide families with a spooky good time.

Those visiting the library are invited to wear their Halloween costumes. Special guests will read stories throughout the evening during the Haunted Storytime. There will be Halloween games and activities, hot dogs, local fresh-pressed apple cider, and Halloween treats. Kids can walk through the gently “spooky” Michigan Room and take home a pumpkin to decorate.

All library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. For more information please call the library at 482-4570 or visit www.pldl.org.
