Tech student arrested for racial threat

HOUGHTON – The Michigan Technological University student arrested Thursday for making a threat against black people was released Friday evening from the Houghton County Jail after posting bond, charged with disturbing the peace.

The subject will be arraigned Monday in 97th District Court in Houghton, according to a university press release.

Ian Repp, Tech director of marketing and communications, said Thursday the person made the threat on the Yik Yak social media. The anonymous threat said the poster was from Houghton and was “gonna shoot all black people.”

Jennifer Donovan, Tech director of news and media relations, verified the person arrested is a Tech student, but the student can’t be named by the university until after the student is arraigned.

After the legal process is completed, Donovan said the situation may be examined by the university’s conduct board.

“He will go through the what we call the university conduct process,” she said.

If the conduct board determines there was a violation of university conduct policies, Donovan said the board will make a decision about possible actions against the student.

“They would call a conduct board hearing to determine that,” she said.

If the board takes action against the student, the student can appeal the decision, Dononvan said.
