US 41 crash near Calumet kills 1

OSCEOLA TOWNSHIP – A single-vehicle accident Sunday on U.S. 41 proved fatal for the 48-year-old driver, according to a written statement from the Michigan State Police Calumet post.

At about 5:30 p.m., troopers from the post responded to a call about the accident near Highway Location Road.

Witnesses to the accident told troopers the northbound vehicle crossed the centerline and left the road striking a tree on the west side of the road. The vehicle caught fire on impact. An MSP trooper was on scene almost immediately. One witness, an Allouez Fire Department firefighter, used the fire extinguisher in the trooper’s vehicle to put out the fire. An off-duty deputy with the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was also on the scene to assist.
