PHOENIX LOCATION – A snowmobile accident Sunday was fatal for an Illinois woman, according to a written statement from the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 11:50 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a multiple-vehicle snowmobile accident on Trail No. 3 about one mile south of U.S. 41 in Phoenix in Allouez Township.

The accident resulted in death for 46-year-old Denise Hesse. Another male driver received injuries in the accident. He was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital by Mercy EMS.

The accident is still under investigation by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s accident investigator. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor at this time.

Assisting at the scene were Allouez Township First Responders, Ahmeek Village Fire and Rescue, Michigan Department of Natural resources and Keweenaw Trails services.
