Body positivity: Learn how to take holistic view of mirror’s image

HOUGHTON – Motivational speaker Erin Bown will offer ways to find something beautiful in the mirror in a presentation at 6 p.m. on Feb. 25 at MTU’s Fisher Hall, Room 135. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

The topic Brown will discuss is body positivity and empowerment, said Whitney Boroski, one of the event’s organizers.

“It’s all about how you feel about yourself,” Boroski said. “When you look in the mirror, that you can find something that is beautiful or that you like about yourself, and not tear yourself apart.”

In a world where the media obsesses over physical appearance and a person’s looks, Body positivity focuses on the whole person, and the physical ability of the body, rather than its appearance. Boroski summed it up.

“I have to two strong legs that can carry me all around all day,” she said. “Or, I have two strong arms that can pick things up.”

“So, I think Erin Brown is more concentrated on emotional beauty and loving yourself, and then finding that strength to love the physical pieces of yourself.

Brown, who is survivor of sexual assault, will also bring that piece into her talk as well, Boroski said.

While the Body Positivity project will be a week-long event reaching out to the Michigan Tech community. Brown’s lecture is open to the general community, and everyone is welcome to attend.
