Keweenaw clerk runs for 3rd term

EAGLE RIVER – Julie Carlson enjoys being Keweenaw County clerk so much she decided to seek a third term in the office.

Carlson said she was first elected clerk in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012. So far she’s the only person to file for the position for the August 2 primary election.

To be eligible to be on the August ballot for any county elected position, Carlson said potential candidates must file by April 19.

Carlson said she’s running again for clerk because for the most part, the job is interesting, and it’s an important position.

“I like it overall,” she said. “It’s pretty vital.”

The Keweenaw County clerk has several responsibilities, Carlson said. She is the circuit court clerk, County Board secretary, registrar of deeds and is responsible for the county payroll and gun registrations.

One of the more important jobs the clerk does is oversee elections, which is a particularly involved job every four years during presidential elections, which also include local and state elections.

“That’s the most stressful by far,” she said.

Carlson said she lives in Mohawk with her husband, Brian, and son, Nicholas. She has two other sons, Brandon and Cody, who live in Fulton.

“My whole family is from Keweenaw County,” she said.

Carlson said as clerk she works for the people of Keweenaw County.

“It’s a great place (with) great people,” she said.
