Grant to CCISD will fund career technical education

HANCOCK – The Portage Health Foundation has provided a grant for $50,000 to the Copper Country Intermediate School District for the second year, George Stockero, CCISD superintendent, said at the organization’s board meeting Tuesday night.

“Last year, I wrote a grant to the Portage Health Foundation to help lower the cost for our CTE (career technical education) classes,” Stockero said. The grant money lowered the tuition cost each school must pay for classes from $1,500 to $1,000. As a result of the decrease in tuition costs, enrollment in the CTE classes increased by 28 percent.

“So, I went back to Portage Health (Foundation) and said, ‘ya know, can I have Year Two?'” Stockero said. “And I’m happy to say they’ve given us a second year, another $50,000 this year, to be used for the total cost for our health and CNA classes.”

Board members stated they were very thankful for the grant from the Portage Health Foundation, noting it will allow many more students to have the opportunity to take CTE classes.

“So, that’s extremely exciting,” Stockero said, “and we can thank Portage Health Foundation.”
