Houghton buys more recycling bins

HOUGHTON – The first wave of recycle bins Houghton made available to its residents sold out quickly.

So the city’s buying a new batch.

The Houghton City Council approved purchasing another 250 containers at its meeting Wednesday.

The city recently entered into an agreement with Waste Management to provide curbside recycling pickup for residents. There are about 175 people on a waiting list for the second run of bins, said City Manager Eric Waara.

“People are excited about it, they’re very optimistic, and I know Waste Management’s already cranking things up and getting ready,” Waara said.

Waste Management will have a dual-stream truck for the pickups in Houghton and Hancock that will arrive next week.

The first 250 containers cost the city about $9,200, and yielded a $9,200 return, Waara said.

Recycling materials can be placed in any container, such as a paper bag or garbage can, as long as it is clearly marked recycling instead of trash.

Three streets have been moved from Tuesday pickup to Thursday pickup – Jacker, Baraga and Calverley avenues.
