Local show of support for police

HOUGHTON – In light of national controversy sparked by the Dallas shooting on July 7 in which five police officers were killed and seven more wounded, local citizens have stepped forward to show their support for the Houghton Police force.

Houghton Police Lt. Nick Roberts said support for their department has been overwhelming.

“The city of Houghton Police Department would like to thank the public for their overwhelming support in consideration of the recent events, particularly in Dallas,” Roberts said. “Like this morning – I was walking down the sidewalk, a gentleman said, ‘God bless you for your service as a police officer.’ We’ve had people come right up to the counter and say, ‘Thank you for your service.'”

Roberts said although his department is not directly involved with the national incidents, “we’ve felt it, and our community has shown overwhelming support for our department in light of (those) events.”

Other officers have said they have experienced the same support, relating stories of many people stopping at the office to thank them for their service, Roberts said.

“Somebody came in today and bought us lunch,” Roberts said, adding that the individual had to have paid more than $100 to provide pasties for the department. “People brought doughnuts in Friday to say thank you.”

Roberts, who is a native of the Detroit area, said he loves living in the Copper Country.

“We do get the same events that you can get nationwide, on a smaller scale,” Roberts said, “but in a smaller community, you see the difference you make in law enforcement. And that’s why I love living here.”

Roberts said even though the Houghton police are not related to the events of last week, “we’re very much involved.”

“This is our moment to let the public know we appreciate their overwhelming response and support,” Roberts said, “and that makes a difference to us, also.”
