Cause of fire undetermined

HOUGHTON – A state fire marshal was unable to determine a cause for the July fire at 511 Shelden Avenue.

In a release, the Houghton Fire Department said the fire is believed to have started in the rear of the building, which saw the brunt of the physical damage. A state fire marshal visited the building several times last week, said Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly. There were also numerous eyewitness accounts of the fire, Donnelly said.

The fire is not believed to have been arson, he said.

“It could have been a human mistake, but we don’t see any criminal activity,” he said.

There will be a benefit spaghetti dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Shelden Grill for the people displaced by the July 29 fire. Tickets are $10 per person.

Donnelly was unsure how many people were affected, but said there were at least seven people, including a family of three.
