Sixth graders get “sneak peak” of high school

HANCOCK – For 13 years, Hancock Middle School has been giving incoming sixth grade students a chance to get a “Sneak Peek” at the school with the intention of relieving the anxiety associated with transitioning from elementary school.

Kipp Beaudoin, Hancock Middle School and Hancock Central High School principal, said Sneak Peek shows students the middle school building by having them take part in a scavenger hunt, they learn where their lockers are located, and they meet their new teachers.

Students see some of their classmates from Gordon G. Barkell Elementary School, and parents can meet, possible for the first time.

“It’s just a nice way for families to meet each other, as well,” he said.

Some families may be new to the district, so the Sneak Peek is instructive for them, Beaudoin said.

Don Lafreniere’s son Peter was a student at Barkell Elementary, and he said they both appreciated the Sneak Peek program.

“It’s a great opportunity for the students to roam around the school to see what it’s all about without the pressure of the first day of school,” he said.

His son was also catching up with friends he made at Barkell, Lafreniere said.

Beaudoin said many middle school parents bring their own children to the Sneak Peek, which Beaudoin said shows how effective it is.

“I think that speaks volumes of the value of it,” he said.
