CCHPC to host Project Homeless Connect

HOUGHTON – The Copper Country Homeless Prevention Coalition will host a Project Homeless Connect event on Thursday, September 15 at the Hope Fellowship Church in Houghton, John Niemela, chair of the CCHPC said.

“The event is for people who are homeless, about to become homeless, or are facing being homeless, or for people who know someone who is homeless,” Niemela said.

Interested people are invited to come and find services Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties that serve individuals and families in need.

“Community Action Agency of Alger/Marquette is our central agent and they will be there,” Niemela said. “Child and Family Services will be here, the domestic violence shelters will have information available, and we’ll have Michigan Rehabilitation Services will be there.” Other agencies may also be present.

Niemela said he is hoping to have some mental health, as well as employment, agencies at the event, also.

Project Homeless Connect is a national initiative sponsored by the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, and is now implemented in the United States, as well as Canada, Puerto Rico, and Australia. The mission of PHC is to rally service providers and volunteers to support this one-day event and create lasting solutions for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The goal of PHC is to provide easy access to services and resources that support the transition of the community’s homeless those on the streets, and/or shelters and into housing.

Admission to the event is free, and lunch is provided. There will be goodie bags for the first 100 people to attend, Niemela said.

The Hope Fellowship Church is located at 3200 West Sharon Avenue in Houghton.

“The easiest way to find the church is to turn at Festival Foods. Hope Fellowship is on the left, right across from the Bluffs,” Niemela said.
