Hancock announces master plan for CCCAC

HANCOCK – A good sized crowd attended open house Monday for the city’s proposed master plan at the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock.

The purpose was to get input from city residents about what possible changes they would like to see in the city, or what they think works well. There were several posters on easels showing pages from the initial plans created by OHM Advisors. Visitors wrote comments on small notes and placed them on the posters.

Heather Seyfarth, planner with master plan creators OHM Advisors in Livonia, Michigan, said she was pleased with the turnout for the open house.

The next stop in the process will involve recording all the comments made by residents at the open house, Seyfarth said. The plan will be adjusted by the city’s master plan steering committee with the comments in mind. That adjusted document will be presented to the city’s planning commission, which will then pass it on to the council. After that, there is a 63-day public review and comment period. The document will be sent to Houghton County officials, neighboring communities and utility companies for further comment.

After a public hearing on the master plan, Seyfarth said the council will either adopt or reject it. If it’s adopted, the city can begin seeking grants to fund any changes to the city set down in the plan.

Funding for the creation of the master plan came from several grantors, whom Seyfarth said initially wanted the completed document by the end of December. However, an extension was granted, and she thinks the final document will be ready by the end of March.

Seyfarth is optimistic about the completion and implementation of the master plan.

“I think it’s doable,” she said.
