League of Women Voters extends deadline for questionnaires

HOUGHTON – Candidates who haven’t filled out the questionnaire for the Copper Country League of Women Voters election guide will get an extension.

The questionnaires are now due on Oct. 7, pushed back from the original deadline of Sept. 21. The extension is an effort to improve the response rate, which so far is only 22 percent, said League of Women Voters member Kathy Flagstadt.

“We don’t want 22 percent,” she said. “We want more than 50 percent. We want everybody to respond. That’s unlikely, but we’re giving them more time to do so.”

Any candidates who misplaced their questionnaire and would like replacements can get them by emailing cclwvmi@gmail.com or by downloading them from lwvccmi.org.

The League is holding a forum for Houghton County candidates at 6 p.m. Thursday at Lakeview Manor in Hancock. All candidates for sheriff, prosecutor and the county board have said they will attend, Flagstadt said.
