Sunday parade is highlight of Ontonagon Labor Day fest

ONTONAGON – Sunday is the big day for the village’s 60th Labor Day festival.

Sunday morning kicks off with a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. It’s sponsored by the Knight of Columbus.

Registration for the Aspirus-Ed Hansen Memorial Run will be from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The run begins at 10 a.m. and will be followed by an awards ceremony at the Fire Hall.

Float assembly and judging will be at noon at the former elementary school football field in preparation for the highlight of the festivities – the 2 p.m. parade down River Street. The parade boasts floats in open, youth and commercial divisions and $1,500 in prize money awarded to the judges top picks.

A drum corps concert will follow the parade at the reviewing stand featuring Pipes & Drums and Marty’s Goldenaires.

Fifty cents will get you into the Community Fest from 4 to 10 p.m. at the village rec center for music, food, beverages, silent auction and games, sponsored by the Ontonagon Mens Association.

The celebration wraps up Monday with the Kiddies Parade at 1 p.m., sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Kids assemble at Syl’s Cafe for judging from noon to 12:30 p.m. The parade will be led by the Copper Country Clown Band. While every child entered gets a prize, special prizes will be awarded for top entries in bicycles, walking, and large and small pulling floats. Motorized and battery-powered vehicles are not allowed.

Kids games follow to end Ontonagon’s 60th year of celebrating Labor Day, an event started by local businesses in 1957 to give back to the community supporting them, Tucker said.
