Coppo named undersheriff

HOUGHTON – Houghton County has a new undersheriff.

Kevin Coppo, a captain with the sheriff’s office, has been promoted, the department announced Thursday.

“I think it’s going to be an awesome challenge,” he said. “My predecessor Roy Britz left it in a great place, to where I can just walk into it, sit down, and take a lot of his stuff and use it and build off of it. We have an outstanding staff, and our road patrol is top-notch, easy to work with.”

Sheriff Brian McLean praised the work Coppo has done with the department.

“He’s done a fantastic job as captain,” he said. “He’s very dedicated and conscientious. He’s had an opportunity to fill in and take over some of the duties and he’s done a fine job, from my observation. I expect him to be around for a long time.”

Coppo has been with the department for 14 years – the past four-and-a-half as captain. He previously worked as a part-time employee on Mackinac Island and worked as a full-time officer in Hancock for about four years before coming to the sheriff’s office.

As captain, he’s supervised the jail and jail staff. As undersheriff, Coppo supervises the road patrol and the day-to-day operations of the building.

“There’s a lot more with the scheduling and the bill side of the job,” he said.

Coppo said he would work with McLean and the county to bring more technology into the department. One thing he hopes for is a mobile data system where officers can do their reports in their car.

“We do a lot of stuff on pen and paper, still, and i want to get that up to the current century,” he said. “It’s not a bad thing, having pen and paper, but there’s so many other tools out there that can be utilized to help make the job more efficient and flow easier.”
