Doug Hebner promoted to jail administrator

McLean

HOUGHTON COUNTY — Doug Hebner, a corrections officer with the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, has been promoted to the position of Jail Administrator, according to Sheriff Brian McLean.

“When Kevin Coppo was promoted to Undersheriff, that left the administrator position open,” McLean said. “It’s a natural chain, everybody going up the ladder a little bit.”

Hebner has served with the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office for almost 20 years as a corrections officer.  He also has worked many seasons as a certified Marine Enforcement Officer during the boating season and is also certified as an ORV Enforcement Officer.

Hebner has also taught classes as a marine safety and has taught off-road vehicle (ORV) operator safety courses for the public though the Sheriff’s Office.  He will begin his duties as Jail Administrator immediately and will be responsible for day to day operations of both the main jail and work camp facilities as well as training and supervision for all corrections staff.

“A jail administrator could be here seven days a week,” McLean said. “He’s in charge of both the jail and the work camp (near the airport).”

Coppo will be responsible for the supervision of the corrections officers themselves, McLean said, which involves training, scheduling, and work crews’ schedules. He is also responsible for seeing to the amenities for the inmates such as bedding, clothing, uniforms medical needs, just to name a few.

The jail administrator also arranged for transportation of inmates to doctor appointments, dentists, and arranges for other medical needs not accessible at the jail, McLean said.

“Doug has served Houghton County well in the past and I’m confident he will continue to do so in the future”, McLean said. “He is always high energy, well organized, knowledgeable in all jail operations and always professional and upbeat – all excellent traits in the busy, fast paced and ever changing jail operations/corrections world.”
