Structure fire destroys Fulton home

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette Fire fighters search the interior of the structure looking for hotspots.

KEWEENAW COUNTY —  A structure fire destroyed a home in Fulton Friday afternoon. The home is owned by an elderly couple. Several fire departments were on the scene, including Ahmeek, Eagle Harbor, Allouez, Calumet, Laurium, and Boston. Deputy Curt Pennala of the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department said he wasn’t sure exactly which departments were on the scene, but “There’s a pile of them.”

Pennala said fire fighters were having a difficult time with the blaze because the hydrants did not water have pressure sufficient to adequately supply water to the house.

“They’ve got these (temporary) pools set up… What they’re doing is one tanker after another they’re coming and dumping water (into them),” Pennala said.

No further details are available, but Undersheriff Olson said a press release will be forthcoming.
