Two rescued from Lake Superior ice

Michael Scott/Daily Mining Gazette Stanton Township Fire Dept. return from rescuing two snowshoers who fell through the ice at the Breakers where the Portage Lake Ship Canal meets Lake Superior.

STANTON TOWNSHIP — Two people snowshoeing Friday at the Breakers where the Portage Lake Ship Canal meets Lake Superior fell through the ice, but were rescued without life-threatening injuries.

According to Anthony Lampinen of the Stanton Township Fire Department and First responders, a female fell through the ice, but was able to get herself partially back onto the ice. Her male companion tried to assist her off the ice, but he fell through also.

They were unable to completely pull themselves out of the water.

Lampinen said Stanton Township Fire Department got a page about the incident at 1:26 p.m. By the time they arrived, members of the United States Coast Guard Dollar Bay station who were working in the area were already there.

Also involved in the rescue were Adams Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders, Bootjack Fire and Rescue, the city of Houghton Ice Rescue, and Houghton County Sheriff’s Office. Mercy EMS transported the victims — who haven’t been identified, yet — to a hospital for treatment.
