The Keweenaw Lions Club held its monthly meeting at Slim’s Cafe on Jan. 6.  The meeting was well-attended to hear Lions District 10, 1st Vice District Governor, Joe Maki speak.  Mr. Maki addressed the state of Lions organizations, covering the status our local club as well as its progress worldwide. While Lions Club membership throughout the world continues to increase, new local membership is encouraged in order to replace aging members, no longer able to participate. There are 55 Lions Clubs in the Upper Peninsula. Global causes include diabetes, vision, world hunger, environment and childhood cancer. These are in addition to the many community causes supported by local Lions Clubs. Mr. Maki recognized Lion members for years of service; Jerry Vairus – 30 years, Brian Carlson – 25 years, Bob Zander – 20 years and Cherri Allen – 10 years.

Keweenaw Lions Club donations for the month of January are as follows: Bay Cliff Health Camp $400, Northwoods Airlifeline $400, Eversight MIchigan $400, Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly $400, Omega House $400 and Leader Dogs for the Blind $900. Leader Dogs for the Blind is a cause very special to 1st Vice District Governor Joe Maki, as he has a close relative challenged with blindness.

The Keweenaw Lions Club holds two fundraisers per year. The first is our Spaghetti Dinner, held at the Horizon School in Mohawk, this year on Sunday, May 3. The second is a Sunset Cruise aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV, held in October. We are very grateful to our community members who continue to support the Lions Club’s many causes. Thank you!
