Salvation Army soldier celebrates 112th with party at Canal View

HANCOCK -Stella Lennox will celebrate her 112th birthday on Friday, Jan. 31. Stella moved to Hancock this last summer when her granddaughter, Brenda DeLacy was transferred here with The Salvation Army.

Stella was born in Aneta, North Dakota. The only girl and oldest of six children, Stella graduated From St. Luke’s Nursing School in Fargo. She later moved to Chicago to complete graduate work at Michael Reese Hospital. While in Chicago, She met and married her husband Hugh. They had two children. Stella worked as a surgical nurse at Cook County Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1969.

She retired to a suburb called Streamwood, Illinois, where she remained in her own house until she was 101 yrs old. She then moved in with her granddaughter in Rockford, Illinois, where she resided until this past summer. Stella has been a Soldier in The Salvation Army for well over 70 years. When asked what her secret is she always responds “You Trust in the Lord and give yourself a kick in the pants and get going.”

Stella is a resident at Houghton County Canal View. There will be a roaring 20’s themed party for Stella at Canal View on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
