Celebrate Saint Urho with the Elks in Ishpeming

A Celebration of St. Urho, the fictitious Finnish Saint who rid the country of grasshoppers thereby saving the grape crop, will be held on Sunday, Mar. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Elks Club in Ishpeming.

There will be music for dancing and listening by Wil Kilpela, accordion, and Ken Holster, banjo, with Tanya Stanaway adding some vocals.

Tanya will have Finnish items for sale at her Heart to Finland table, and Janet Wisuri will be selling her baked goods. A 50/50 drawing will be held.

Coffee and “pulla” (cardamom coffee bread) will be served, and the Elks bar will be open.

Ron Hill, president of the sponsoring group – the Finlandia Foundation National Lake Superior Chapter – will tell how the legend of St Urho got its start.

Tickets for the event are $5 per person at the door.

All are welcome at this gathering. Those attending are encouraged to wear purple and/or green, the colors of St Urho.
