BHK Foundation awards six $500 scholarships to area students

HOUGHTON – Six area high school seniors who participated in BHK Child Development early childhood education programs have been awarded scholarships through the BHK Foundation. The BHK Foundation Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate academic integrity, commitment to learning and community, and will serve as good role models to children and youth.

The recipients include Madalynn Matson and Molly Myllyoja, both graduating from Dollar Bay High School; Michael Ackermand and Brady Schmeirer, from Houghton High School; and Kathleen Tollefson and Alyssa Robillard, graduates of the L’Anse High School. Madalynn Matson, daughter of Holly and James Matson of Hancock, has been accepted at Wayne State University and plans to pursue a degree in exploratory physical science and mathematics. Molly Myllyoja, daughter of Mark and Patti Myllyoja of Dollar Bay, has been accepted to the University of Michigan and plans to study engineering. Michael Ackerman also plans to attend the University of Michigan and will study history and statistics. He is the son of Jena and David Hale, and Scott Ackerman, all of Houghton. Brady Schmierer, son of Lisa and Jim Schmierer of Houghton, plans to pursue a degree in Economics at Michigan Tech University. Alyssa Robillard is the daughter of John and Debby Robillard of L’Anse, and plans to attend Gogebic Community College for a degree in Early Childhood Education. Kathleen Tollefson, daughter of Susan and James Tollefson of L’Anse, will attend Finlandia University to pursue a degree in Nursing, with plans to eventually become a nurse anesthetist.

The BHK Foundation was created in January 2005, to support BHK Child Development Board education services and programs for area families. The scholarship program is made possible through the generous support of individual donors.
