Drug arrest, Ontonagon County

On May 13, following a three-month investigation, detectives from UPSET (Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team) arrested a 39-year-old male from Houghton for Possession with Intent to Delivery Methamphetamine, a 20 year felony.

UPSET detectives developed information that the suspect had been bringing in large quantities of methamphetamine to Houghton County for several months. Detectives determined the suspect was traveling back from Minnesota on Thursday, May 13. The vehicle was located on M-28 Hwy near Ewen, Michigan and a traffic stop was conducted by troopers from the Michigan State Police Hometown Security Team.

An exterior search of the vehicle was conducted by MSP Negaunee Post K-9 Unit, which indicated that illegal drugs were in the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle and passengers, troopers discovered a quarter pound of methamphetamine that the driver was trying to hide on his person. Detectives also seized cellphones and other drug paraphernalia used to smuggle illegal drugs.

The suspect was lodged at the Ontonagon County Jail and his name will not be released until his arraignment in 98th District Court, Ontonagon County. The case is being reviewed by the Ontonagon County Prosecutor’s office and additional charges are expected.

UPSET was assisted by MSP-Hometown Security Team, MSP-Negaunee Post K-9 and the Ontonagon County Sheriff
