State police investigate fatal L’Anse crash

L’ANSE — The Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash believed to have occurred in L’Anse Township early Thursday morning.

Vergil Mongozid, 19, was discovered in his truck Sunday near the eastbound lane of U.S. 41 near the entrance to Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

Mongozid had been reported missing Thursday, after Northern Michigan University Public Safety called the Baraga County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a wellbeing check. Mongozid had allegedly been involved in a prior incident NMU Public Safety had investigated the previous night.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post and officers from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police contacted Mongozid’s sister at his home in L’Anse. She told them he had not been seen since 2 a.m. that day.

After investigators could not turn up his whereabouts, police put out an area broadcast for Mongozid and his vehicle, a late 80s model single-cab F-150.

The MSP Calumet Post continues to investigate the incident.
