All ballots match in Houghton recount

HOUGHTON — A hand recount of a Houghton precinct conducted as part of a statewide effort Friday found no difference from November’s original results.

Houghton’s Precinct 2 was one of several Upper Peninsula precincts to have its Nov. 8 votes recounted in Marquette Friday. The 1,370 votes in the precinct matched 100 percent, said Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly.

“I’m beyond happy,” she said.

More than 500 precincts across 43 counties in Michigan were included in the recount for Proposal 3, which added abortion rights to the state constitution. Precincts in four downstate counties were also recounted for Proposal 2, which expanded voting rights.

The recount filing fee — a $125 deposit per precinct — was financed by The America Project, which has funded lawsuits seeking to overturn the 2020 election.

That initial deposit will not cover all expenses incurred in the recount, county clerks have said this week. Kelly said county costs would include $300 for county canvassers to oversee the recount.

Members of the Michigan State Board of Canvassers, which approved allowing the recount to proceed as required by state law, said there would not be enough votes involved to overturn the election. Proposal 2 received about 60% of the vote statewide, while Proposal 3 got 57%.

Other Upper Peninsula precincts are Marquette precincts 2, 5 and 7 and Chocolay Township Precinct 1 in Marquette County; Sault Ste. Marie precincts 1, 2, and 3 in Chippewa County; Kingsford precincts 1 and 2 and Norway’s Precinct 1 in Dickinson County.
