May election sees light turnout

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette A snow-covered voting sign is seen outside Houghton’s Precinct No. 2 at Dee Stadium Tuesday morning. Precincts reported light in-person turnout for the election, which included a county-wide road millage renewal in Houghton County.

HOUGHTON — Heavy snow and a light ballot combined for a slow day of in-person voting for May’s election.

The only county-wide measure on Tuesday’s ballot was the 10-year, 1.37-mill renewal of Houghton County’s road millage.

There were other local millages in villages and townships through Baraga, Houghton and Ontonagon counties, predominantly for roads and fire protection.

Hancock’s Precinct No. 1 at city hall had only seen five in-person voters by around noon. Eighty-nine voters had cast absentee ballots out of 110 who had requested ballots, said poll worker Faith Morrison.

“That’s a very high return on absent voter requests,” she said.

Houghton’s No. 2 precinct at Dee Stadium had seen only eight in-person voters by about 11:45 a.m., slow for an off-year election, said poll worker Susan DeLisle. There had been 260 absentee ballots cast in the precinct.

Full results will be in Thursday’s Daily Mining Gazette.
