Wednesdy crash in Houghton under investigation

HOUGHTON –A personal injury accident occurred on Wednesday, July 5, when the driver of a Chevrolet pickup drove the vehicle over the edge of a parking deck on Portage Street. the accident occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m.

A Wednesday statement from the city of Houghton Police Department states that the driver was transported to U.P. Health Systems-Portage by Mercy Ambulance.

Assisting at the scene were the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, the Hancock Police Department, and the Michigan Tech Police, the statement says.

The accident remains under investigation, according to the statement.

Further details will be released as the investigation continues.

In a Thursday update release, the Houghton Police reported that the vehicle was driven by a 29-year-old Houghton male. He was traveling north on Portage Street when the vehicle suffered a mechanical failure. The vehicle continued to gain momentum as it traveled north on Portage Street, crossed Montezuma Avenue and entered the parking deck. The pickup truck then went through the guard rail, striking the southeast corner of UP Engineers and Architects building, coming to rest on on its roof on Portage Street near Shelden Ave., striking a parked, unoccupied vehicle.

The driver, who was transported to the local hospital by Mercy Ambulance, was treated for injuries, then later released.

The release states that a damage assessment and repair plan is being prepared at this time by the city of Houghton. There appears to minimal damage to the deck itself.

The area will remain cordoned off until the investigation can be concluded and the cleanup can be completed.
