Man pleads guilty in child porn case

Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette Kyle Britz, seen with his attorney David Gemignani, pleaded guilty to four child pornography charges in Houghton County Circuit Court Friday.

HOUGHTON — A Chassell man pleaded guilty to charges of downloading child pornography in Houghton County Circuit Court Friday.

Kyle Britz, 20, was arrested in 2022 after a Michigan State Police investigation stemming from a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Britz pleaded guilty to four charges: child sexually abusive activity-aggravated, a 25-year felony; child sexually abusive material-aggravated possession, a 10-year felony; and charges of using a computer to commit a crime paired with both charges, with maximums of 20 and 10 years, respectively.

Responding to questions from his attorney David Gemignani and Prosecutor Dan Helmer, Britz said he had downloaded more than 100 photos and at least one video of prepubescent children, some of which he had shared on Snapchat.

Eight other counts were dismissed in the agreement. Both sides also agreed the minimum length of the sentence would be no longer than three years.

Gemignani said he also plans to seek Holmes Youthful Trainee Act status at sentencing. The designation allows for the conviction to be expunged if the defendant successfully completes probation.

Sentencing will take place in 30 to 45 days.
