Write-ins seeking office in Copper Country

HOUGHTON — A number of write-in candidates in the Copper Country filed by the Oct. 25 deadline to be added to the November ballot. Candidates ran in Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties; none had filed in Baraga. 

Houghton County

At the county level, Teresa Karinemi filed to run against incumbent Jennifer Kelly for clerk and register of deeds. 

On the Hancock City Council, Dean Woodbeck filed as the sole candidate running in Ward II, where he will fill the position currently held by Richard Freeman, who did not seek re-election. 

On the Laurium Village Council, Andrew Kurt Erickson has filed as a trustee. 

Write-ins also filed for trustee races in two townships: Donald Grant Budd in Duncan Township, and Jeffrey Scott Ploskonka and Sarah Louise Hiltunen in Laird Township. 

At the local school board level, candidates are Brady James Tervo for Chassell Township Schools; Joyce Arlene Pirhonen and Jared Daniel Johnson for Elm River Township Schools; and, for voters in Duncan Township, Matthew Urbis, Luke Basel and Rena Maki for Ewen-Trout Creek Schools. 

Keweenaw County

The county’s only write-in candidate comes at the county board level, where John Kaura is running for the District 3 seat against incumbent Del Rajala, the board’s vice chair. 

Ontonagon CountyA

In Ontonagon, Dorothy Sharkey is running for a partial term on the village council.

Matthew Urbis, Luke Basel and Rena Maki are running for the Ewen-Trout Creek Schools board, whose jurisdiction falls primarily in the county.

The other candidates are at the township level. In Bergland Township, Suzanne Barnaby is running for treasurer. In McMillan Township, Linnea Waters, Raymond Rigoni, Jr., Alice Leno, Mary Carol Coleman and Dianne Hardes are running for the library board. In Ontonagon Township, Michael Badgero is running for the park board. In Stannard Township, Kirk Schott is running for trustee.
