Off the northeastern coast of Isle Royale National Park, a diving accident occurred Thursday afternoon, claiming the life of John Nousaine, 70, of Superior, Wisconsin. The accident took place at 1:44 p.m. while Nousaine was exploring the wreck of the Emperor on the stern section of the sunken vessel which ranges from 100 to 150 feet deep. The Keweenaw County Sheriff, Medical Examiner and National Park Service responded to the incident, and an investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

HOUGHTON — A list of facade mini-grants in Houghton’s downtown was sent back to the Downtown Development Authority for review after City Council members objected to a recipient who had sued the city. The DDA has given out grants for smaller projects that might not happen without assistance, City Manager Eric Waara said. The DDA solicited applications from throughout the DDA boundaries, then picked recipients and recommended amounts. Councilor Robert Megowen said the council should send the issue back to the DDA.
