EAGLE HARBOR — Brockway Mountain Drive is the tallest scenic drive between the Rocky and Allegheny Mountains. It’s Michigan’s crown jewel for scenic drives, ranking at the tallest in the state and the most scenic. Offering panoramic views of Lake Superior and the surrounding landscape, the nine-mile route to the clouds is open from May to late fall – typically whenever the snow makes it impassable by car. When winter sticks it becomes open to snowmobile traffic – giving visitors year-round ways to enjoy the mountain. Before it closes to automobiles – here’s six ways to enjoy Brockway one more time this fall.
Stick Season Views: As autumn’s leaves return to the earth’s surface, tree lines and outlooks see increased visibility. Peer through trees that would normally obstruct views for more open views of Lake Superior and the surrounding Keweenaw. See further in forests and enjoy fall’s last triumph before the snow falls.
Bird Watching/Wildlife Viewing: See the wildlife that overwinters in the Keweenaw. You’ll see owls, cardinals and other furry critters enjoying the cooler time of year. Brockway Mountain is a major migration waypoint for migratory birds each spring and fall.
Hiking/Biking: Brockway Mountain Drive is mapped with multipurpose trails. You could hike up spots like Berry Picker Trail from the north base of the mountain or take your mountain bike through the “On the Edge” trail along the east cliffside.
Dark Sky Observation: There is virtually no light pollution in Copper Harbor, making Brockway Mountain Drive one of the best dark sky viewing areas in the Keweenaw. Just down US-41 is the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park. Take a night adventure to the drive and park to soak up the last of fall.
Kite Flying: High above Lake Superior (700+ feet to be exact), Brockway Mountain sees some serious winds. Revisit your childhood or introduce kiddos to the hobby of flying kites. They’ll soar up into the sky and stay afloat for hours!
Weddings: Brockway Mountain can be utilized for weddings. Tie the knot in the Keweenaw this fall and make it a destination to remember. If you’re looking to get married on Brockway, you need to reach out to Eagle Harbor Township first to set up arrangements/alert them to your plans. There are some rules/guidelines to using Brockway for an event.
