‘Ashamed and disgusted’
Ontonagon Democrats denounce ICE
EWEN — At a recent meeting of the Ontonagon County Democratic Party, a resolution regarding the activity of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agents unanimously passed. In a press release submitted to the Daily Mining Gazette, the Ontonagon County Democratic party stated it is “ashamed and disgusted at the obvious violations of constitutional rights directed at United States citizens by ICE officers.”
The resolution further states the party “”condemns the violent, unconstitutional actions of ICE and federal agents in Minnesota and rejects the validity of using any village, county, or state resources, personnel, or property in Michigan from being used to assist in civil immigration enforcement, including the staging of agents in municipal parking lots or facilities.”
The resolution alleges “Unconstitutional ICE Activity” and demands the withdrawal of federal agents from Minnesota. The Ontonagon County Democrats accuse ICE of engaging in intensified, militarized enforcement operations in Minnesota including the use of armed, masked agents, which “has resulted in the terrorizing of immigrant communities and the death of residents.”
The resolutions accuses ICE agents of racial profiling, breaking into homes without judicial warrants and targeting community members in “safe spaces, including schools and neighborhoods.”
The resolution references the shooting deaths by ICE agents of. Renée Good on Jan.7 and Alex Pretti, Jan.24 in Minneapolis, “creating a crisis of public safety and fear across the region.”
The resolution alleges the actions by federal agents have disrupted community life, closed businesses, forced school lockdowns and “necessitated the use of local law enforcement resources to manage the chaos caused by federal agents.”
In conclusion the resolution resolbves that the Democratic Party of Ontonagon County is “ashamed and disgusted at the obvious violations of constitutional rights directed at United States citizens by ICE officers,” and “condemns the violent, unconstitutional actions of ICE and federal agents in Minnesota.”
In addition to calling for the withdrawal of federal agents from Minnesota the resolution “rejects the validity of using any village, county, or state resources, personnel, or property in Michigan from being used to assist in civil immigration enforcement, including the staging of agents in municipal parking lots or facilities;
Finally the resolution concludes with “Be it finally resolved that we stand in solidarity with our immigrant and refugee neighbors and reaffirm that our community is a safe space for all, regardless of status.”
The resolution, passed on Fed. 1, carries no legal weight, but is entered into the public record.
