Visit Keweenaw partners with Leave No Trace

CALUMET — Visit Keweenaw has partnered with Leave No Trace (LNT), an organization focused on conserving the world’s most special locations, like the Keweenaw.

“The Keweenaw Peninsula is a unique outdoor destination that offers endless opportunities for recreation but is at risk of severe damage if travelers don’t put Leave No Trace practices into action,” said Community Engagement Manager, Faith Overall. “We are excited to be partnering with Visit Keweenaw to provide critical, responsible recreation messaging to residents and visitors in the region.”

The partnership builds upon Visit Keweenaw’s efforts to promote responsible recreation strategies to area visitors and recreationists. The effort was launched last summer in response to a community listening session hosted in Eagle Harbor Township and included updates to Visit Keweenaw’s website, social media outreach and printed area information.

“Our goal is to help visitors better understand best practices to keep them safe while protecting and preserving the Keweenaw’s wilderness,” explained Brad Barnett, executive director of Visit Keweenaw. “It’s important, particularly for those visiting the Keweenaw for the first time, to understand and practice concepts like Leave No Trace and how to prepare for visiting remote areas that often lack cell services and other public amenities. Being prepared makes for a more enjoyable visit and reduces unnecessary stress to public services.”

Visit Keweenaw’s partnership with Leave No Trace starts with a review of the organization’s website, VisitKeweenaw.com, and area information to identify opportunities to incorporate Leave No Trace principles. Once the review is complete, Leave No Trace will then offer technical assistance and messaging collateral to Visit Keweenaw for ongoing improvements. At this time, Visit Keweenaw is one of three Michigan destination marketing organizations partnering with Leave No Trace. The other two are Travel Marquette and Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau.

The set of seven LNT principles can help tourists and locals enjoy natural areas while being safe and preserving the Keweenaw for future generations.
