Weldon Jurva

PRINCESS POINT – Weldon Jurva, 94, passed away on August 31, 2016, at UP Health System-Portage.

He was born to August and Hildur (Moilanen) Jurva on February 2, 1922, in Hancock.

In his youth, he lived in Pontiac and went to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.

Following that, he went to work for Pontiac Motors briefly before joining the United States Army.

During his service in World War II, he went on five separate combat campaigns and left the Army as a staff sergeant.

After his service, he went to and graduated from Suomi College with an associate’s degree. After school, he moved to Detroit and started working for General Motors.

He was united in marriage to Eva Palo in Detroit. After retiring from General Motors, he moved to Princess Point.

He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, making many trips to visit them in Oregon, Chicago, Milwaukee and Florida. Weldon was well known for his charm and dry sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William, Melvin, Jack, Gerald, Elvar, and Roy; sisters, Ruth and Lorna.

Surviving are his wife, Eva; sons, Franz (Heidi) Jurva of Corvallis, Oregon, Jon (Leanne) Jurva of Chicago, Illinois, Jason Jurva of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; daughter, Sheryl (Robert) Wall of Kenilworth, Illinois; grandchildren, Olivia, Chloe, Ingrid, Greta, Anders, Annikki, Wesley, Augie and Axel; brother, Paul Jurva; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Calumet on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 1 p.m. with Pastor David Taivalkoski to officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will follow with a veteran service at the Lake View Cemetery.
