Katherine McKay

Flags flew at helfstaff on Mackinac Island in honor of Katherine Mary (Bynoe) McKay, 51, who passed away, Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at University Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Katie was born on February 2, 1965, in Detroit to Robert H. and Judith A. (Dufina) Bynoe and from the age of three, spent all her summers on Mackinac Island with her family and a horse she shared with her sister, Patty.

Katie was graduated summa cum laude in 1983 from Cypress Lake High School in Ft. Myers, Florida. She was a gifted musician and was selected to tour Europe in the summer of 1983 with the American Music Ambassadors. She sat in the first chair for the flute/piccolo.

She attended Michigan State University for two years, during which time she was a member of the MSU Symphone Band and the MSU equestrian team. In 1988, she earned a degree in nursing from Suomi College in Hancock.

She was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church on Mackinac Island.

Katie leaves four children, Riley, Kaitlyn, Dawson and McKenna McKay of Houghton. She is also survived by her mother; two sisters, Patty Schoenborn and Peggy (Jeff) Naber; her brother, Jamie Bynoe; a niece Lily Schoenborn; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Katie was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Robert H. “Robbie” Bynoe II.

Funeral mass was celebrated on October 4, 2016, at St. Anne’s Church. Fathers Jim Williams and Frank Ricca officiated. Katie’s sister Peggy played beautiful music for the service and her close friend Carolyn May sang.

She was carried to her final resting place in St. Anne’s Cemetery.

May Katie always rest in peace on the shores of Mackinac.
