Mandy Sue Kela

DOLLAR BAY — Mandy Sue Kela, 29, a resident of Dollar Bay, passed away unexpectedly in an automobile accident on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016.

She was the daughter of Mark and Sue (Hirvela) Kela and a graduate of Dollar Bay High School.

After having her daughter in March 2010, Mandy attended Gogebic Community College to continue her passion in nursing, graduating as LPN in 2014.

She started her nursing career at Our Lady of Mercy in Hubbell when she was 17. She was so full of light and joy, always taking extra time to put someone’s hair in curlers, paint their nails, sing a song or catch the last few minutes of a TV show with some of her “favorite” residents.

After finishing school, Mandy worked at UP Health System – Portage as an LPN and had plans of going back to school to graduate as an RN.

She was a free spirit, had a contagious laugh and loved the summertime – boating, being in the sun around family and friends, and having fun. There wasn’t a song she couldn’t sing.

She is preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Arthur Kela, and her maternal grandfather, Melvin Hirvela.

Surviving are her mom and dad, Mark and Sue Kela; her beautiful six-year old daughter, Ava Laine Nye; her sisters, Tracy (Ben) Underhill, Christina (Eric) Tulppo, Paula and Ashley Kela; the father of her child, Peter Nye; her paternal grandmother, Arlene Kela; her maternal grandmother, Lorraine Hirvela; her nieces, Alyssa Tourtillott, Maia Myllyoja and Isabelle Underhill; her nephews, Andrew and Alex Underhill and Mark Dube; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; and her special friend, Scott Karppinen.

Services for Mandy will be held at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 12 p.m. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Per Mandy’s request, cremation has taken place.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations can be sent to the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in care of Mark and Sue Kela.
