Barbara Alice Newman

CALUMET — Barbara Alice Newman, 40, of Calumet died peacefully at Aspirus Wausau following a severe asthmatic episode.

Barb was born August 21, 1977, just before her twin sister and life-long co-conspirator Carol Janckila to Virginia (Cuber) and Gordon Newman in Calumet.

Barbara grew up in Albion and attended Calumet Schools graduating with the Class of 1996. She graduated from the Institute of Natural Therapies and was a sought after massage therapist most recently working for Maggie’s Massage Spa Resort in Houghton.

Barb had extraordinary enthusiasm and a zest for life that was unmatched. She made the best of every situation bringing joy to every gathering and person lucky enough to meet her. She was a lover of nature and the simple things in life. She was always happiest hiking, exploring the woods, picking rocks and watching sunsets at the lake. Barb loved jamming to music and spending time with friends and family. Barb was also an enthusiastic friend of Bill W.

Barb was an excessively proud mother to her adored children, Olivia Rain Torola (20), Alice Azalea Torola (18), Marcus William Hammond (9), and Eliot Ethan Hammond (6), all of Calumet.

Barb was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur Newman; sister-in-law, Mary Newman; cherished brother-in-law, Ryan Kilpela; niece, Alicia Newman; and nephew, Donald Elander Jr.

In addition to her children, Barb is also survived by her beloved significant other and partner, Eric Waarala of Calumet; parents, Gordon and Virginia (Cuber) Newman; siblings, Peg (Gene) Niedholdt of Norfolk, Virginia, George Newman of Calumet; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Newman of Nebraska, Liisa (Barry) Koljonen of Lac la Belle, Jennifer Oakes of Lanse, Eric Newman of Calumet, Sam (Julie) Newman of Fulton, Liddy (Jamey) Markham of Houghton; twin sister, Carol (Bruce) Janckila of Centennial Heights, Michael (Joy) Newman of Florida Location, Robert (Catherine) Newman of Ahmeek Location; and numerous aunts, uncles, adoring nieces, nephews, cousins and an un-countable number of close personal and best friends.

A celebration of life will be held at the Siskiwit Reception Hall in Calumet on Friday, January 5, 2018, with visitation from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and a service starting at 4 p.m. Please wear bright colors to represent her bright personality.
