Gremlins softball sweeps Patriots

ISHPEMING — Backed by the pitching of Stella Soumis and Romi Mattson, the Houghton Gremlins softball team earned a pair of wins on the road against the Westwood Patriots Thursday. The Gremlins (6-2 overall) won the opener, 10-2, and the nightcap, 14-0.

In the first game, Soumis struck out 10 and walked one while giving up eight hits in seven innings.

Shortstop Clea Ollanketo drove the offense, going 5-for-5 in the lead off spot. She had two doubles, one RBI, and scored five times in the game.

Catcher Kenzie Collard did her best to match Ollanketo, and even surpassed her in terms of runs knocked in, as she picked up four RBI. Collard went 5-for-5 with one run scored.

In the second game, Soumis was again critical, but this time with her bat. After being held hitless in the opener, she went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and two runs scored in the second game.

Center fielder Brynn Arko was also good, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one double, and one run scored. Ollanketo added two hits in two at bats with one RBI, two walks and three runs scored.

Mattson threw 4 2/3 innings, striking out four and giving up just four hits.
