Helen (Peter) Kinnunen

ATLANTIC MINE — Helen (Peter) Kinnunen, 89, a resident of Atlantic Mine, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at the Omega House in Houghton.

She was born on May 20, 1930, in Liminga, a daughter of the late Jalmer and Hilda (Seppala/Luoma) Anderson. Helen was raised in Liminga and attended the Redridge School before graduating from the Houghton High School with the Class of 1948.

She then worked for a time at Federal Land Bank and then Johnson Bros.

On June 27, 1953, she was united in marriage to Peter Kinnunen. The couple had resided in Atlantic Mine where they raised eight children.

Mrs. Kinnunen was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Atlantic Mine. She had helped her husband with bookkeeping for the family business for many years. She also enjoyed making and decorating wedding cakes for many years. Helen always loved company, their door was always open to family and friends. She also enjoyed picking berries for making jams and also making juice with her Mehu Maija.

Preceding her in death were her grandson, Alex Muszynski; her granddaughter, Andra Aho; and her great-grandsons, Brendan Johnson and Rowan Kinnunen; her parents, her brothers, Melvin and Reino; and her sisters, Millie Maki and Margaret Markham.

Surviving are her husband, Peter Kinnunen of Atlantic Mine; her children, Edie (Jerry) Johnson of Atlantic Mine, Steve (Nancy) Kinnunen of Atlantic Mine, Vicky (Bill) Sleeman of Chassell, Dan (Denise) Kinnunen of Atlantic Mine, Peter (Sherry) Kinnunen III of Atlantic Mine, Pam (David) Aho of Mohawk, Ron (Lora) Kinnunen of Atlantic Mine, Shelley Kinnunen of Essexville; 63 grandchildren; and 152 great-grandchildren; her brother & sisters, Mike (Margie) Anderson of Boston Location, Loie (Milton) Erva of Houghton Canal, Shirley Anderson of Houghton Canal; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Helen will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton.

Burial will be in the Oskar Cemetery.

Friends may call on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton.
