Marvin ‘Mort’ F. Herstrom
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Marvin “Mort” F. Herstrom, 92, passed away in Green Bay on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, following a short illness.
He was born February 14, 1929, to Arthur and Phoebe (Kumpala) Herstrom in Laurium. Marvin attended local schools and graduated from Calumet High School in 1947.
Upon graduation, Marvin enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Japan.
After serving he returned to the Copper Country and pursued his passion for sports. Marvin enjoyed playing baseball but excelled in hockey. He played with the local hockey leagues and eventually in Eagle River, Wisconsin, with their semi-pro team.
Marvin then moved to Detroit where he was employed by Cadillac as an inspector. There he met and married his wife of 56 years, Annette (Wahtola), on June 14, 1952. “Mort and Netsy” moved the family back to the U.P. and settled in Kearsarge. He worked as a miner in the local copper mines, before deciding to continue his education.
Marvin attended Michigan Tech, graduating in 1973. After graduation he was employed by UPPCO and held various positions until his retirement in 1991.
After retirement Marvin and Annette enjoyed traveling to visit family. They were members of the Calumet Golf Course and Calumet Elks Club. Marvin also enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the American Cribbage Congress.
Marvin is survived by his daughters, Lynda (Svante) Andersson Hayden, Lake Idaho, Lisa (Mike) O’Leary, Green Bay and Lori Herstrom, Green Bay; his five grandchildren, Jessica, Matt, Britta, Lea and Ryan; and four great-grandchildren, Jakob, Alexandra, Aksel and Malik.
He was preceded in death by his wife Annette; sons, Bill and Terry; and his parents and siblings.
