NEGAUNEE — Robert Clyde Stinson, age 81, former resident of Chassell passed away at Teal Lake Senior Living Community on Thursday, May 5, 2022, in the loving, comforting care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.
Mr. Stinson was born in Coudersport, Pennsylvania and grew up in Beaver Falls in western Pennsylvania. He graduated with an Elementary teaching degree from Slippery Rock University in 1962. Mr. Stinson taught for three years in Beaver, Pennsylvania, and then moved to Lower Michigan, teaching in Garden City Schools for one year. After attending Eastern Michigan University Graduate School and earning a Master’s Degree in Geography, Mr. Stinson began an 18 year teaching career as a Geographer at Michigan Technological University. He left Michigan Tech to return home during his father’s final illness and stayed three years, while working as a counselor at George Junior Republic, a treatment facility for juvenile delinquents. Mr. Stinson returned to Lower Michigan and was employed as a Geography Professor at Macomb Community College, Mr. Stinson retired in 2005 and returned to the Copper Country, making his home in Chassell.
Mr. Stinson was an avid outdoorsman. He loved deer and bear hunting, waterfowl hunting and small game hunting and was an avid fisherman, making trips to Canada as well as around Michigan and Pennsylvania to pursue these interests. He operated a Bear Kill Check Station for the DNR for many years. Mr. Stinson was also a long time Hunter Education Instructor of over 50 years service. He was a member of the Portage Lake Sportsman’s Club, Whitetails Unlimited, Friends of the NRA and Ducks Unlimited. He was very active in helping put on fundraising banquets for these organizations.
Mr. Stinson was active in community service as well. He worked as a CPR Instructor for the American Red Cross and as an EMT with Mercy Ambulance when is was first founded. After retirement, Mr. Stinson became a member of the Keweenaw Land Trust Board of Directors and a community representative on the Copper Country Trails/National Scenic Byway Committee. Mr. Stinson also served on the Western Upper Peninsula Citizens Advisory Committee for the Michigan DNR.
Mr. Stinson was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Helen (Hutcheson) Stinson.
He is survived by his daughter, Corey (Patrick) Holcomb and three granddaughters, Madison, Cheyenne and Cassidy Holcomb of Negaunee, Michigan, and his sister, Ann Stinson of Grove City, PA.
A public visitation will be held from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm, Sunday, May 29, 2022, at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral Home. Guests are asked to wear their best camo.
