HOUGHTON — Robert M. Chopp, 72, passed away at home in Traverse City, Michigan on June 15, 2022 due to complications with MS and Vascular disease. He was born in Detroit on 1/23/1950 to Edward and Patricia Chopp. Two years later a sister Lindy (Chopp) Smith was born in Lansing. The Chopp family soon after relocated to Laurium in the U.P. The remainder of Robert’s time in the U.P. was in Lake Linden where the family enjoyed the community and life up north. During high school Robert enjoyed working at the local theater in Calumet. He also worked at the Hiawatha Drive-In during the summer months. After graduation Robert worked driving truck and then moved into the insurance company that his father owned. Robert left that position to work at Delta Airlines where he worked until retirement due to disability and complications with MS.
Robert maintained a great sense of humor and great outlook on life. He loved to make the doctors/nurses and caretakers laugh. Robert had an enormous love for his therapy cat and dear friend Oliver. Oliver comforted him during the tough times and gave Robert a certain spark to his life.
He is survived by one sibling, Lindy (Chopp) Smith and Oliver, his therapy cat and companion. He was proceeded in death by his father Edward Chopp and mother Patricia Carlton Chopp.A graveside memorial will take place at the Calumet Cemetery in Calumet, Michigan. Memorial donations can be made to Saint Joseph’s Church in Lake Linden in honor of Robert and his love for God. Robert would like to thank the multitude of people that have assisted him through the difficult times of life, the doctors, nurses, and so many amazing aides.
