Dorothy V. Norkol

Dorothy V. Norkol, 84, a resident of the Hancock Canal passed away Monday, November 28, 2022, at the Woodland Haven of Canal View — Houghton County where she had been a resident patient for the past 5 years.

She was born on February 7, 1938, in Houghton, MI, a daughter of the late Waino and Vivian (Hietala) Solmonson.

Dorothy was raised in Houghton and was a graduate of the Houghton High School with the Class of 1955.

On July 20, 1963, she was united in marriage to Alden “Hank” Norkol. The couple made their home on the Hancock Canal.

On October 16, 2016, Hank preceded Dorothy in death. Mrs. Norkol had worked as a typesetter for the Daily Mining Gazette before her marriage to Hank and until the birth of their daughter.

She then worked as a Secretary for the Hancock Housing Commission until her retirement.

Mrs. Norkol was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. She had been an active member and a Leader in the local 4-H program. Dorothy also was a talented seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Preceding her in death were her husband Alden, her parents, her brothers Paul and Douglas and a niece Donna.

Surviving are: Her daughter: Lisa (Steve) Gracik; Her grandchildren: Dylan Gracik and Shelby (Carl) Dusbabek; Her great-grandson: Cole Dusbabek; Her sisters-in-law: Violet Norkol and Mary Norkol; Her nephews: John, Jerry, David, Dan & Derek; Several cousins.

A memorial service for Dorothy will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. Brahm Semmler Smith to officiate. Interment will be in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Columbarium later this spring. Friends may call on Saturday, December 3, 2022, from 12 noon until time of services at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock.
